There is a common misconception that we must understand something fully before we can experience it to the fullest. Anyone who has ever fallen in love knows this is a false idea. In the spiritual life, as in love, understanding often comes after we surrender ourselves to an experience that is beyond full comprehension. The apostle Paul brings these two ideas together as he prays in Ephesians 3:16-19: “I pray that out of his glorious riches he may strengthen you with power through his Spirit in your inner being, 17 so that Christ may dwell in your hearts through faith. And I pray that you, being rooted and established in love, 18 may have power, together with all the Lord’s holy people, to grasp how wide and long and high and deep is the love of Christ, 19 and to know this love that surpasses knowledge—that you may be filled to the measure of all the fullness of God.”

Understanding and experience are not in conflict with each other, as if one is better or more spiritual. They work together – fueling our spiritual transformation in Christ by the power of the Holy Spirit. In this message series, we will be preaching to increase our understanding, but gaining knowledge without surrendering to experience the presence and power of the Holy Spirit, will produce very limited results. In contrast, A. W. Tozer wrote that, “A moment of spiritual revelation from the Holy Spirit can surpass all the understanding gained through a decade of seminary education.” We are praying for a posture of humility and openness to increase both our understanding and experience of the presence, power and love of God through the person of the Holy Spirit.
